Description

As the khan’s family and relatives were the sole visitors of this new settlement, the area became known as “Khan’s village”. Shortly after it was official named Khankendi. Ethnic Armenians who populated the Garabagh khannate since 1828 mainly settled down in the vicinity of Khankendi. During Soviet time the city was renamed after a Bolshevik partisan and became Stepanakert. In 1988, with the support of Armenia, the population turned to separatism and tried to cesede Azerbaijan. On November 26, 1991, the historical name of the city was returned and renamed Khankendi. The attempts of the Armenians to divide Azerbaijan and keep this city under occupation vanished with the victory of the Azerbaijani army on 10.11.2020.
