Description
Shaki, located in the most picturesque area of Azerbaijan, is considered to be one of the oldest human settlements in the Caucasus, with archaeological evidence of human occupation from over 2500 years ago. The grand Shaki Khan palace is the pride of old Shaki. The palace was built in the 18th century without using a single nail or a single drop of glue. Latticework, a method of assembling pieces of wood and coloured glass, was used to construct the building.
Shaki has always been known as a city of masters, craftsmen and silk producers, and was visited by merchants from all over the Silk Road countries. For this reason, special attention was devoted to the construction of the caravansarays, the merchants’ hotels.
