The crescent and star also appear on pre- Islamic coins of South Arabia. Before Islam the crescent was the symbol of Sassanids.
Since the 12th century the crescent and the star were adopted by the Turks and the Ottomans and have become their historical symbol. Turkic nations such as the Göktürks used the crescent and star fiqure on their coins.
The crescent and star are on the flag of Azerbaijan. They were often an inspiration for antique Azerbaijani jewellery.
