Description
This motif, also referred to as medahil (“doorways”) or scepter head, is often found in Persian and Talish carpets. This border is reciprocal – each part of the motif has the same shape so that two motifs fit together and are completely congruent. Any of these parts can be interpreted as subject or ground.
This model has also been decorated with S- shaped motifs which are believed to be a symbol of funnelled flow of water and thus, hint at ameliorated way of life or, alternatively,
stand for fertility and immortality.
