It is so-called Kufesque margin. Early forms of this design are discernible in fourteenth-century rugs, whose patterns are closely related to the decoration using Kufic script (the oldest calligraphic form of Arabic). Kufic script was prevalent in manuscripts in 8th-10th centuries and was used for arch inscriptions in mosques in the early Mongol period.
