Description
The S or Z element is a common element in tribal weaving and is used as a medallion filler motif and border.
Some researchers suggest that the S symbolizes a serpent or dragon, deriving ultimately from Chinese dragon motif.
Others suggest that S-shaped ornaments resemble a funneled flow of water and thus, hint at a settled-down, ameliorated way of life or, according to other interpretations, at fertility and immortality.
