Description
One notable motif is the Crab ornament, extensively featured as a central element in Talysh carpets. Lankaran, mentioned as a human settlement in the writings of the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, derives its toponymic origin, commonly interpreted as ‘an anchorage’ in Persian. Throughout history, Lankaran has held the distinction of being the foremost trading port in Azerbaijani territory. In 1743, the city became part of the Talysh khanate, alongside Masally, Lerik, and other surrounding areas.
Archaeological excavations in this region have uncovered various ancient monuments, including a sword symbolizing masculinity, depicted in this model. The Talysh region, blessed with favorable climate and fertile soil, has emerged as a hub for exporting subtropical plants and fruits, a theme reflected in the representation of lemons and tea leaves in this model. Furthermore, the unique ironwood tree, found in the Hyrcan reserve within Lankaran’s territory, is also featured in this depiction.
