Description
Mughan carpets amalgamate key elements from various carpet styles found in the neighboring regions of Azerbaijan, situated between the Kura and Araz rivers. These regions include Sabirabad, Jalilabad, Saatli, and Bilasuvar. The predominant feature in these ornate designs is the hooked element known as the ‘kehna pattern.’ Some sources suggest that this element serves as a marker representing a 12-year period. In ancient Turkish calendars, time was not only measured in days and months but also in cycles of 12 years, each associated with a specific animal or constellation.
Remarkably, the early Dutch artist Hans Memling (1438–1494) incorporated Mughan-style carpets in his paintings. Mughan carpets can be found on display in several prominent museums worldwide.
