Shamakhi’s name first appeared in the writings of the ancient Greek geographer Ptolemy. Situated at the crossroads of vital trade routes, the city faced frequent enemy attacks, leading to the construction of castle walls as a defensive measure. The enduring tradition of viticulture in Shamakhi, facilitated by favorable climatic conditions, is symbolized by the vine and jug, reflecting centuries of winemaking in the region.
Additionally, Shamakhi has been renowned throughout ancient history as one of Azerbaijan’s prominent centers for carpet-making. The Shamakhi carpet, belonging to the Shirvan carpet-making school, stands out with its distinctive patterns and intricate compositions. The rhombus, a recurring motif in these carpets, holds religious significance, representing various concepts such as the earth, femininity, and a fruitful beginning depending on its placement.
