Description
Although the current city was founded in 1750, the city has traces of settlements dating to the Stone, Eneolithic and Bronze Ages. Shusha grew rapidly and in the 19th century turned into a city which was seen as progressive not only in Azerbaijan, but also in the entire Caucasus. Shusha is the homeland of the great composer U.Hajibeyli and famous mugam singers. Shusha was well-known as the “Caucasian Music Conservatory”, “Caucasian Italy” and “Little Paris”. Rich in architectural monuments, the city had 17 neighborhoods, each with its own distinct bath-house, fountain and a mosque. Blessed with more than 300 historical monuments Shusha was declared a State Historical and Cultural Reserve in 1988. For many decades Shusha stood out for its carpet weaving, silk weaving, jewelry and handicrafts that also contributed to the development of applied arts. Shusha was liberated on 08.10.2020 after 28 years of occupation by Armenia.
