Description
These motifs derive from the carpet which refers to the legend of the Wak-Wak tree.
Eastern literature states that the Wak-wak Tree announces the rising and sometimes also the setting of the Sun. The Wak-wak was located in the extreme East of the world.
Alfred R. Wallace (British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, and biologist) believed that the legend of the Wak-wak Tree arose from the morning cry of “Wak wak!” made by the Bird of Paradise from its tree homes in the Aru Islands.
This legend is reflected in carpets woven during the Mughal dynasty of India in the late 16th century.
